How to Take Care of Your Sick Child While Working From Home

As a working parent, you can have more time with your family when you work from home.

But it isn’t without its challenges. After all, taking care of your family while working is quite distracting if you don’t set the right boundaries. (Though you can better adjust when you follow these simple tips.)

Another challenge is when your kids are sick and need extra attention.

You can’t exactly ignore them when they’re like that. So how do you balance being productive while taking care of them? Here are some tips.

Be Honest with Your Boss

Be Honest with Your Boss

First of all, be honest with your clients. It’s best to inform them of your current situation and limitations during this emergency.

You might request more flexibility when it comes to your output, at least for the time being.

Use-Your-Leaves

Use Your Leaves

If you have paid leaves, now might be the best time to use them.

Yes, you might be saving them for another occasion. But if you can’t focus on work, you might as well use your leaves to take care of your child.

But make sure to inform your supervisor as soon as possible so that they can make the necessary adjustments as well.

Work in Close Proximity to Your Kid

Do you work in dedicated workspaces to avoid distractions, especially at home? This allows you to concentrate on the tasks at hand — probably without your kids in sight.

But you might want to break that boundary when your child is sick, more so for toddlers. What if something happens when you’re in a different room?

When you’re in close proximity to your sick kids, you can address their concerns almost immediately.

Utilize Their Nap Time for Productive Work

Want a productivity hack? Well, your kid won’t be awake all the time.

You should take advantage of their nap time. During such, you should work on tasks that need your full focus. Take it as your deep work session.

And when they’re awake, you can switch to less mentally demanding tasks, if any.

Don’t Forget to Ask For Help

Don’t Forget to Ask For Help

You don’t have to do it alone. You can share the responsibility with your spouse.

It can mean shifting schedules while taking care of your kid. When you have an approaching deadline, or you just need productive time, you can pass on some work to him/her.

If possible, you can also ask for help from your family or friends. Some of your loved ones are more than willing to give a hand. It might be tending to your kid directly or simply cooking some meals.

You can also pay for additional help from babysitters, cooks, laundromats, etc. to ease some of your obligations.
