7 Reasons Remote Workers Should Adopt a Pet

7 Reasons Remote Workers Should Adopt a Pet

Working from home can often feel lonely. And there are several approaches to combat these feelings of isolation. But one of the most effective ways is to have a fur baby.

And if you are thinking about owning a pet, you might have heard the phrase, “Adopt, don’t shop.”

In case you’re unfamiliar with the saying, here are the reasons why you should adopt, not shop.

Adopting is More Affordable

Adopting is More Affordable

When you adopt a pet, it is undoubtedly much cheaper compared to buying a new furry companion.

Think about it this way: the breed of cat or dog you want probably ranges anywhere from ₱15,000 to ₱50,000. (Sometimes, more! Purebreds are inherently more expensive.)

However, when you visit a shelter, you only spend around ₱500 to ₱1,000 for the adoption fee.

This gives you more wiggle room in your monthly earnings as a remote worker.

Some Shelter Animals Are Already Spayed or Neutered

It’s no secret that owning a pet is like having a baby.

You need to pay for a lot of things to ensure that your fur baby is safe, happy, and comfortable.

One of the most common operations performed on animals is spaying and neutering. And it costs quite a bit.

Not to mention, your dog or cat or other domesticated pet must have their complete vaccinations, which can add up to the overall expenses of owning a pet.

However, when you adopt a pet cat or dog, they may have already undergone these procedures. This way, you get to save money.

You Have a Nice Range of Options

You Have a Nice Range of Options

A common misconception is that when you adopt a pet, your choices are limited.

Not really.

Chances are, you will come across the perfect canine or feline companion at the shelter for you!

And if you adopt a fully-grown pet rather than buy a puppy or kitten, you also don’t have to see what personality traits your fur baby will have. So, you can choose to adopt a pet that suits your work-from-home lifestyle already.

And if you prefer purebreds, some shelters do have them.

Training is A Lot Easier

Training is A Lot Easier

Adopting a grown dog or cat means they have likely already been house-trained. These furry companions are probably already used to living around humans.

Unlike when you get a new puppy or kitty, you get to skip the part of having to train your pets from scratch.

Adoption is thus more convenient, especially if you are too busy with your remote job to fully focus on training your new fur baby.

You Could Provide a Better and More Loving Home for Abandoned Pets

There are many reasons why people leave their furry friends in shelters.

Some owners go through lifestyle changes, such as separating from their partners, job loss, health issues, etc, that may be incompatible with owning a pet.

Others simply do not have the patience to train a new pet. Or if they are relocating, especially to a different country, there can be strict laws against bringing a pet.

As such, when you adopt a pet, you provide companionship to a dog or a cat (and they can do the same for you too!)

Second Chance at Life

Second Chance at Life

In the Philippines, pets that are captured by the city pound and remain unclaimed for some time are unfortunately euthanized.

And while not all of them do so, a few pet shelter owners are forced to carry that out because they can no longer sustain the costs that come with running these places properly.

Thus, you give a furry animal a new chance at life when you choose to adopt.

A Good Way to Prevent Overpopulation

Lastly, puppy and kitten mills exist in the Philippines. These are facilities run by humans who take advantage of breeding dogs and cats so they can sell them for a high profit.

Overpopulation can be quite an issue because dogs and cats need to produce a lot of puppies and kittens.

Most of the time, animals bought from pet stores come from these mills. When you adopt a pet, you don’t directly put your hard-earned money into the pockets of humans running these facilities.

Save a Life, Adopt a Pet

Save a Life, Adopt a Pet

Most of the time, you go into a pet shop, pick your choice of breed, pay, and then walk out. It is all very transactional.

And even after all that, it takes hard work to make sure your pet is cared for properly.

That being said, adoption (and having pets, in general) has far more benefits than simply buying from a pet shop. You also get to spread your happiness and kindness to a creature that is created to give and receive love.
