There’s no shortage of experts and specialists in the remote industry. You’ve got your software developers, mobile app developers, and remote accountants or bookkeepers. So, it’s no surprise that even those with a background in architecture can also find remote working opportunities.

How? To start, you can look into working as an AutoCAD designer.

As any architect worth their salt knows, AutoCAD stands for commercial computer-aided design and drafting software application. It’s used by plenty of professionals including graphic designers, engineers, and city planners. However, it’s most commonly associated with architects since the software is especially handy for rendering and drafting blueprints and layouts.

autocad designer salary

Here are the average salaries you can get, depending on your skill level. So, what does it take to get an online job like this? Let’s find out.

Role Description

An AutoCAD designer’s primary job is to convert architectural and engineering designs into technical drawings. These drawings then figure into the design process for microchips and skyscrapers, as well as everything in between.

Like most professionals, AutoCAD designers can specialize in different sorts of drafting (e.g., architectural, civil, electrical, or mechanical). Still, their typical duties would include:

  • Coordinate with engineers and architects;
  • Using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create design drafts;
  • Generate drafts from an engineer’s or architect’s rough sketches and specifications;
  • Apply engineering and manufacturing techniques to the product design process;
  • Use building techniques to add pertinent details to architectural plans;
  • Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for new products.

Skills Required

Obviously, you would need to be proficient in the use and application of the software in question. An architectural or engineering background is also a huge plus, if not a necessity. How else would you be able to create accurate technical drawings if you didn’t understand certain architectural concepts?

Specifically, you would need the following skills to thrive as an AutoCAD designer:

    • Formidable mathematical skills. To create accurate drawings, you may need to carry out basic to complex computations to solve for angles and weights, among other things.
    • CAD proficiency. Really, this goes without saying.
    • BIM (building information modeling). Whether you’re drafting plans for a house or a building, this skill is crucial.
    • Attention to detail. Taking note of important details ensures that the plans you convert are technically accurate. This skill also enables you to create drawings that follow outlined specifications.
    • Creativity. You would be turning plans and visions into technical drawings that will help make them a reality, after all.
    • The ability to work well with others. While you might be working remotely most of the time, you would also be constantly coordinating with other professionals. Taking constructive criticism and advice, as well as offering such to architects, engineers, and other designers, is all part of the job.

What Should Be On Your Resume?

Again, while an architectural degree can get you further in this remote posting, it’s not the only thing that you should highlight. If you’ve got an associate degree in drafting from a technical college, that’s great too. Furthermore, you’ll want the entries in your resume to emphasize your skills in these areas:

    • Computer proficiency. You can indicate how long you’ve been working with AutoCAD and what projects you’ve finished with the program.
    • Time management. Include the duration of your projects to clue potential employers in on how you can abide by deadlines.
    • Problem-solving. Which of your projects helped solve a particular problem in which industry?
    • Teamwork. Have you worked on major projects alongside a team or a company? Be sure to specify who you’ve worked with and that they can vouch for you if needed.
