Brain Drain? Remote Work and the Cebu Great Resignation

Brain Drain? Remote Work and the Cebu Great Resignation

If you think that the “great resignation” is happening only in the US, think again. Recently, many Filipino workers are also considering resigning to search for better opportunities.

According to a recent study conducted in Cebu, 42% of the workers have said that they’re considering quitting their current jobs. The main reason they’ve considered resigning is the lack of benefits.

In addition, the study also showed most of the roles where many employees are quitting don’t offer a remote work setup. These roles are primarily from the Information Technology-Business Process Outsourcing (IT-BPO) industry. These include Administrative, Call Centers, Quality Assurance, and Sales and Marketing.

With this in mind, how exactly can remote work help alleviate this “brain drain” happening in Cebu? To answer this question, here are some ways working via online jobs can help solve this problem.

Providing Remote Work Is What Cebu Workers Want

Providing Remote Work Is What Cebu Workers Want.

Perhaps the obvious answer to how remote work helps solve Cebu’s “great resignation” is that workers want a permanent remote work setup. Going back to my previous point, the roles where employees quit the most are the ones that don’t allow for remote working.

This has become a problem, as many workers have experienced working from home and have grown to like it. Companies offering a permanent remote work setup then have a better chance in retaining old employees and gaining new ones today. After all, if you offer something they want, they’ll readily flock to apply to your company.

Remote Work Offers a More Flexible Work Setup

Next, let’s talk about the flexibility offered by remote work over an office one. In remote work, workers have more control over their schedules than in a traditional setup. This allows them to have more time to spend with their families at home while at work.

Other than that, having a flexible work schedule allows Cebu workers to work anytime, anywhere. This means that they can finally say goodbye to the hassles of commuting and instead focus on their work.

And if they want to go on a vacation this summer with their family and friends, yet they have essential work to do, they don’t worry. They can simply adjust their schedules so they can accomplish their work.

A Remote Setup Rewards Outputs More Than Presence

A Remote Setup Rewards Outputs More Than Presence.

Another advantage remote working brings to Cebu workers is that it’s results-driven, rather than one’s presence at work. This means that productivity is measured through accomplishments; rather than simply being present. So if you’re capable of accomplishing your tasks in a short amount of time, you’ll be rewarded more in this setup.

In addition, a results-driven work setup like remote work also incentivizes employees to work instead of just lazing around during their shift. This, in turn, promotes employees to hone their skills and utilize them at work. Besides, it’s also pretty hard to do nothing when you know your boss or supervisor can easily monitor your progress.

Remote Work Allows Workers From Other Provinces to Fill the Gaps

Who says Cebu workers are the only ones who can benefit from remote working? Since there’s no need to go to an office anymore, a company’s pool for applicants just got wider. Now everyone within the country can apply for vacancies in Cebu companies.

However, this does have some downsides. For one, Cebu workers wanting to work remotely now face more competition. This means that if one wants to stand out and get hired, they must show they’re the best applicant among them.

One Man’s Resignee Is Another Man’s New Hire

One Man’s Resignee Is Another Man’s New Hire.

The world has changed drastically since the pandemic started. The most evident of these changes is the shift from an office-based setup to a remote one for work. Many workers have seen the advantages of this setup and are now hesitant to return to the office again. This can be seen from the so-called “great resignation” that has been happening in Cebu lately.

One great way to solve this problem is by providing a more permanent remote work arrangement to Cebu workers who want them. Aside from being what they want in the first place, remote work offers several benefits unavailable to an office setup, as mentioned above.

I hope this article helps you see how remote work is a solution to solving Cebu’s “great resignation” problem. If one is to prosper in this new work environment, one must learn to keep up with the times.
