Starting the New Year Right: Toxic Traits to Leave Behind in 2021

One way to start the New Year right is by detoxifying yourself from all your toxic traits from last year. Detoxifying allows you to begin the year on a positive note and remove any negativity you may still carry from last year. But to do so, you need to identify first what your toxic traits are.

To help you accomplish this, here are some of the toxic traits that you should leave behind in 2021. These traits serve as a hindrance to success in your career and personal life. Removing them helps improve your mental health and your chances of success in your online jobs this year.

Constant Negativity

Constant Negativity.

Let’s begin this article with the trait of constant negativity. With all that’s been happening lately, such as the increased number of daily Covid cases these past few days, it’s understandably hard to remain positive. That said, there is such a thing as being too negative with your outlook in life.

Yes, acknowledging that today’s circumstances are challenging isn’t bad. But if you just wallow on it and despair constantly, then it becomes a problem. Having constant negativity prevents you from seizing opportunities that come your way due to apathy. In addition, having this mindset also brings down the general mood of anybody you’re talking to.

Self-centeredness

Self-centeredness.

Another toxic trait worth leaving behind last year is self-centeredness. A lot of the traits that I’ll be discussing in this list are, in one way or another, connected to self-centeredness. For example, caring too much about yourself over others ruins any of your current relationships and prevents you from making new ones.

Another negative result of self-centeredness is it also stunts your opportunity to grow as a person. After all, you’re perfect the way you are right now. So why bother change, right? You also tend to blame others for any problems you may encounter in your online jobs or in any other activity. This leads people to think that you’re too whiny and annoying to be with.

Anger Issues

Anger Issues.

Ah, anger issues. One of the most common toxic traits and also most destructive. Being quick to anger leads you to making rash decisions and saying words that you don’t really mean, at least I hope not. Sure, you can say sorry once they calm down, but sometimes the damage is already done.

And speaking of apologizing, a lot of times, people with anger issues are usually insincere of their apologies. They really don’t want to apologize, as that means that they were wrong. They just don’t want to hear anything negative from the person they got angry at.

Being Overly Competitive

Being Overly Competitive.

For the record, being competitive is not a bad thing. It helps you push yourself to newer heights in your online jobs. It also stimulates new ideas within the company, and helps set an example for other employees.

The problem is if you obsess over competition too much. This causes mistrust and paranoia, as you see everyone as a potential competitor to your goals. This means shutting yourself from your co-workers and refusing to collaborate with them. Being too competitive also leads you to become underhanded with your work and use any means necessary to advance yourself.

Insecurity

Insecurity.

Another common toxic trait that a lot of us have is insecurity. In this age of social media, appearances are everything. All this information can get to one’s head and make you feel insecure about yourself. This sense of insecurity can make us seek things that we don’t really need or are detrimental to our well-being to fit in.

Jealousy

Jealousy.

Connected with insecurity is jealousy. Whenever we feel insecure about a perceived deficiency we have, whether it’s material items or a position, we also feel envious of those who have it. We resent them for having things we don’t have and strive to get even with them somehow. This jealousy can destroy relationships and ruin your image in the eyes of others.

Stinginess

Stinginess.

Stinginess is another toxic trait that’s best left in 2021. One common mistake we usually make, particularly during this quarantine, is to be too stingy with our resources. These range from our money and food; to something like one’s time and attention. At its worst, we refuse to share what we have with the very people we care about; because we may “need it later.”

Being Too Judgemental

Being Too Judgemental.

And last but certainly not least, let’s talk about being too judgemental. In today’s intricately-connected world, being judgemental is detrimental to your career. Not only will it deprive you of many opportunities, but it will also make you difficult to work with.

This toxic trait is particularly pervasive because we all have inherent biases. It’s kinda hard to change how we think about certain kinds of people, after all. But just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean you can’t change it. Being more open-minded helps you make new friends with unexpected people and widen your horizons to new opportunities.

Conclusion

Conclusion.

And we are done! Here are the toxic traits that you should leave in 2021. The new year gives us a chance to right old wrongs and improve ourselves in life and our online jobs for the better. But to do so, we first need to know and acknowledge our own shortcomings. These toxic traits are what holds us back from doing our best.
